West End Park

2021 | St. Louis

Client: West End CID
Team: WashU Sam Fox Office of Socially Engaged Practice, Pocketparks, St. Louis ArtWorks, Brightside, St. Louis Arts Chambers

In partnership with Matt Bernstine from WashU’s Office of Socially Engaged Practice, we designed a pocket park in the West End neighborhood that could serve as a place for community gathering. Championed by nearby residents, this park was a collaboration between many organizations to make it possible: students from St. Louis ArtWorks designed sculptures that framed the space; Pocket Parks and WashU organized painting installation days; Brightside provided the planting; and the St. Louis Arts Chambers and the West End CID led the community organization to bring energy and momentum to the project. The project’s budget and maintenance constraints shaped a deliberately simple design — one that has proven more resilient for it. The park remains intact and well-used today, a testament to the community investment that brought it to life.
